Luoyang Institute of Archaeology (Luoyang Cultural Relics Protection Center) is a cultural relics research unit integrating cultural relics investigation, archaeological excavation, scientific research, cultural relics protection and utilization. Its predecessor can be traced back to the 50s of the 20th century by the Central Joint Archaeological Team and the Second Cultural Relics Task Force of Henan Province, in 1958, the Luoyang Museum was established and the Cultural Relics Protection and Excavation Unit was established. On this basis, the Luoyang Cultural Relics Task Force was formally established in 1981. In 1986, after the establishment of Luoyang Prefecture was revoked, the prefecture and city were merged, and the second cultural relics task force of Luoyang City was established on the basis of the Luoyang District Cultural Relics Task Force. In 2011, according to the needs of the changing situation of cultural relics, the Luoyang Municipal Party Committee and the Municipal Government integrated the Municipal Cultural Relics Task Force and the Second Cultural Relics Task Force into the Luoyang Institute of Cultural Relics and Archaeology. In 2022, the Luoyang Institute of Cultural Relics and Archaeology, the Cultural Relics Exploration Center, and the Cultural Relics Exchange Center will be merged into the Luoyang Institute of Archaeology.

1. Office (Party Building Section)

Responsible for cultural relics and operational safety; Responsible for the safety management of the hospital; Undertake the safety and security of cultural relics warehouses and temporary outreach cultural relics; Responsible for the daily inspection of cultural relics sites and the temporary safety management of unearthed cultural relics; Undertake employee safety education and safety training.


3. Prehistoric Research Laboratory. Responsible.

4. Shang and Zhou Research Laboratory.

Responsible for the archaeological investigation, excavation and research of ancient cultural relics related to the Xia, Shang and Zhou dynasties.


5. Han and Wei Research Laboratory.

Responsible for the archaeological investigation, excavation and research of ancient cultural relics related to the Han and Wei dynasties.


6. Sui and Tang Dynasty Research Laboratory.

Responsible for the archaeological investigation, excavation and research of ancient cultural relics in the Sui and Tang dynasties and later periods.


7. Cultural relics exploration center.

Responsible for archaeological survey and exploration work; Undertake the research and formulation of technical specifications and quality standards for archaeological survey and exploration; Responsible for the training and assessment of archaeological exploration technicians.


8. Cultural relics preservation center.

Responsible for the management of the cultural relics warehouse; Responsible for the protection, management and utilization of cultural relics and archaeological specimens in the library; Undertake the registration, transfer and storage, archiving and informatization construction of unearthed cultural relics and archaeological specimens; Responsible for the display and exhibition of cultural relics; Undertake the work of immovable cultural relics protection projects.


9. Cultural relics restoration center.

Responsible for the protection and restoration of unearthed cultural relics and archaeological specimens; Undertake the declaration of relevant cultural relics protection units and the "four haves" work.


10. Cultural relics exchange center.

Responsible for the management of social cultural relics; Responsible for the circulation management of cultural relics and the identification of cultural relics.


11. Public Archaeological Centre.

Responsible for sharing archaeological achievements with the public, popularizing archaeological knowledge, and carrying out a series of public archaeological activities; Responsible for the operation and management of Luoyang Archaeological Museum; Responsible for the collection, collation and release of information on the unit's official website, official account platform and other online media.
